NASA and the US Department of Energy have announced plans to install a nuclear reactor on the Moon by 2030.
The lunar reactor will rely on nuclear fusion to provide power for NASA’s upcoming Artemis missions and future manned missions to Mars.
According to NASA, the two agencies have signed a memorandum of understanding, which also includes plans to install a nuclear reactor in orbit.
In December, US President Donald Trump issued an executive order emphasizing renewed focus on reactors and “American space dominance.”
Commenting on the initiative, US Secretary of Energy Chris Wright said he believes the project will be one of the greatest technological achievements in the history of nuclear energy and space exploration.
