The action-packed political satire One Battle After Another and the blues-filled vampire tale Sinners are leading the nominations unveiled Wednesday for Hollywood’s Actor Awards - formerly known as the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards - widely seen as a bellwether for the Academy Awards.
Both films are in the running for the SAG honour of Best Movie Cast, alongside competitors Hamnet, the Shakespeare-inspired drama; Marty Supreme, a ping-pong-themed picture; and the Gothic sci-fi Frankenstein.
Among the actors nominated are Leonardo DiCaprio for his role as Bob in One Battle After Another, Michael B. Jordan for his dual performance as twin brothers Smoke and Stack Moore in Sinners, and Jessie Buckley as Agnes Hathaway in Hamnet.
In television categories, the dark comedy The White Lotus will go head-to-head with the medical drama The Pitt and the psychological thriller Severance. Meanwhile, the culinary comedy The Bear competes with The Studio, Abbott Elementary, and Hacks. The Emmy-winning limited series Adolescence also received multiple nods.
The Actor Awards, renamed in January 2025, are closely watched because winners are chosen by SAG-AFTRA members, the largest voting bloc for the Oscars. This year’s winners will be announced on March 1 in a ceremony that will stream live on Netflix.
SAG-AFTRA President Sean Astin acknowledged the ongoing impact of last year’s Los Angeles wildfires, noting that the 2025 nominations had been announced online due to the disaster.
“I want to acknowledge that this is the first anniversary of the devastating Los Angeles wildfires,” he said before Wednesday’s announcement.
