The suicide attempt by a 21-year-old university student in Lahore prompted a detailed police investigation and emergency medical intervention as she remains unconscious on a ventilator.
According to police investigators, the student arrived at the university at 7:58am, but did not attend any classes and remained on campus before the incident.
Police said the student was talking on her mobile phone for 27 minutes prior to jumping from the second floor at around 8:30am.
Phone activity before jump
Investigators revealed that the student deleted the last call from her mobile phone just before jumping. Police also confirmed that the girl’s older mobile phone had been taken by her brothers a day earlier after it was damaged.
According to police findings, the student had recently scored 18 out of 35 marks in a university test. She was reportedly dissatisfied with her results and had shared her concerns with her father and brothers.
Domestic dispute likely
Police stated that the initial investigation suggests a domestic dispute may be linked to the incident. However, officials stressed that all angles are being examined, and the final cause will be determined after further investigation.
Authorities said the student’s family has not yet filed any application for legal action. Police are continuing to gather information from family members and have begun recording detailed statements from both brothers.
Victim’s statement
Police confirmed that all CCTV footage has been obtained and is being reviewed to reconstruct the sequence of events. The investigation will be taken forward after the student regains consciousness and records her statement, officials said.
Following the incident, the student was shifted to Lahore General Hospital, where she underwent emergency surgery. According to the hospital’s medical board, fixators and iron frames were applied to both legs to stabilize multiple fractures.
No brain surgery planned
Doctors decided not to perform brain surgery, opting instead for treatment through medication. The student remains unconscious and on a ventilator, while specialists from multiple disciplines are preparing a comprehensive treatment plan.
Police reiterated that all circumstances and evidence are being examined, including CCTV footage and family statements.
Officials emphasized that conclusions will only be drawn after completing the investigation and hearing the victim’s account.
