King Charles is reportedly reluctant to move toward a full reconciliation with Prince Harry, even after the father and son held private talks in the UK last year. Royal commentators say the monarch remains guarded following years of public tension.
King Charles and the Duke of Sussex met privately at Clarence House during Prince Harry’s visit to the UK in September. The meeting marked their first face-to-face interaction in nearly two years.
At the time, the encounter sparked speculation that it could signal the beginning of a reconciliation between the estranged father and son.
Following media reports about a possible thaw in relations, Prince Harry publicly rejected the narrative. He claimed the stories were “intent on sabotaging any reconciliation between father and son.”
His response highlighted ongoing sensitivity around press coverage and palace briefings related to the royal family.
King felt pressured to meet
Writing in the Daily Mail, royal editor Rebecca English suggested that King Charles agreed to the meeting partly to avoid future criticism. She said refusing to see Harry could have been used against the monarch later.
According to English, the King’s decision left him cautious rather than encouraged about further engagement.
English noted that much attention had been given to the September meeting, the first between them in 19 months. She added that there is reluctance within royal circles to discuss the details, given concerns over perceived leaks and reactions from the Sussexes.
“The impression I get is that the King felt slightly railroaded into it,” she wrote. “In truth, he knew that if he refused to meet Harry, then this would inevitably have been ‘weaponised’ against him.”
She concluded that the King’s approach appeared to be to meet once and then step back, rather than reopen regular contact.
