Veteran Bollywood actress Hema Malini has spoken candidly about the emotional turmoil she faced after the death of her husband, Dharmendra. In a recent interview, she described the period as one of the most difficult phases of her life.
Hema Malini recently opened up about her struggles following Dharmendra’s tragic passing. The 77-year-old actress shared how deeply the loss has affected her and her family.
Speaking to Times of India, she described the experience as an “inconsolable shock” after decades of companionship.
Remembering 45 years of togetherness
Hema Malini recalled the long and difficult period leading up to Dharmendra’s death. She said the family spent nearly a month struggling as his health deteriorated.
“We were constantly trying to cope with whatever was happening in the hospital,” she said, adding that the entire family — including Esha, Ahana, Sunny, and Bobby — stayed together during the ordeal.
Reflecting on Dharmendra’s final days, the actress shared that there had been earlier instances when he recovered after hospital visits. This time, the family believed he would return home again.
She revealed that Dharmendra spoke to them normally and even wished her on her birthday on October 16. His own birthday on December 8, when he was to turn 90, was being planned as a celebration.
“To personally see him sink was very difficult,” she said, adding that no one should have to endure such pain.
Returning to work as a tribute
Despite the grief, Hema Malini surprised fans by announcing her return to work with the New Year. She said resuming her professional commitments would honor Dharmendra’s wishes.
“I am resuming my work now, I am heading to Mathura,” she said, explaining that she would continue performances, shows, and pending work as a way to cope with the loss.
