New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani has opposed the US attack on Venezuela.
The New York mayor contacted President Donald Trump by phone and conveyed his concerns. He said an attack on a sovereign country amounts to an act of war and would also affect the citizens of New York.
US Senator Bernie Sanders also criticised President Trump. He said the justification offered by President Trump for an attack on Venezuela is the same as that presented by Vladimir Putin in defence of the attack on Ukraine.
It may be noted that a day earlier, US forces carried out strikes in several areas, including the Venezuelan capital, Caracas. Following the attacks, President Nicolás Maduro and his wife were taken into custody and transferred to the United States.
Venezuela’s Vice President Delcy Rodríguez has temporarily assumed presidential responsibilities under a court order. She rejected the recent statement by US President Donald Trump and called for the immediate release of President Nicolás Maduro.
