Google is giving Google Translate its biggest upgrade in years by powering it with Gemini. The update promises more natural translations, live audio translation through headphones, and smarter language learning features.
Google announced it is infusing Google Translate with Gemini capabilities to significantly improve translation quality.
The upgrade focuses on handling nuanced language such as idioms, slang, and local expressions more accurately.
According to Google, this marks a new standard in translation quality across its platforms.
The improved translations are now available in Google Search and the Translate app on both iOS and Android. The rollout begins today in the United States and India.

Translations currently support English and nearly 20 other languages, including Spanish, Hindi, Chinese, Japanese, and German.
Live translations through headphones
Google is also introducing a new beta feature that enables real-time translations through headphones. The feature preserves tone, emphasis, and speech cadence to make conversations sound more natural.
Users can access it by opening the Translate app, putting on headphones, and tapping “Live translate.”

The beta is rolling out on Android in the US, Mexico, and India. More than 70 languages are supported at launch. Google said the feature will expand to more regions and arrive on iOS in 2026.
Improved language learning tools
Google Translate’s language learning tools are also getting an upgrade. Users will now receive improved feedback and tips based on their speaking practice.
A new feature allows learners to track how many consecutive days they’ve been practicing.
This aims to help users stay motivated and reach their learning goals.
The learning tools are expanding to nearly 20 new countries and territories, including Germany, India, Sweden, and Taiwan.
