Bollywood actor Salman Khan has approached the Delhi High Court to safeguard his publicity and personality rights.
The actor’s plea comes amid growing concerns over the unauthorized use of celebrity identities online.
On Thursday, the Delhi High Court heard Salman Khan’s petition requesting protection from the unauthorized use of his persona. The court directed social media companies to respond to the complaint within three days.
The petition seeks to restrain several named and unnamed individuals from exploiting Salman’s name, image, voice, likeness, dialogues, mannerisms, and other personal attributes without consent.
Alleged misuse impacting brand
Salman stated that multiple platforms and entities have been using his identity without permission, potentially misleading customers and harming his brand. He emphasized that such actions could cause irreparable damage to his commercial and personality rights.
The actor’s legal move reflects broader concerns in the entertainment industry about safeguarding celebrity identities in the digital age.
Legal precedents among bollywood stars
Salman Khan is among several public figures taking judicial steps to prevent identity misuse on social media. Others who have filed similar petitions include Amitabh Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Nagarjuna, Anil Kapoor, Abhishek Bachchan, and Jr NTR.
These actions highlight the increasing importance of protecting publicity and personality rights as social media usage expands.
The Delhi High Court has ordered social media platforms to respond within three days. Observers expect a detailed interim restraining order soon, covering other parties involved in the case.
