Fifteen years after 3 Idiots became a cultural phenomenon, the iconic blockbuster is finally set to return with a sequel featuring its original cast.

According to reports, Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor Khan, R. Madhavan, and Sharman Joshi will reunite for 3 Idiots 2, directed once again by Rajkumar Hirani and produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra.

A new report suggests the sequel will be a direct continuation of the 2009 film, revisiting the characters nearly 15 years after they went their separate ways in the original’s emotional climax. The beloved trio -- and the world of Rancho, Pia, Farhan, and Raju -- will come together for what insiders describe as a fresh, meaningful, and humorous new adventure.

According to a source quoted by Pinkvilla, “The script has been locked, and the team is extremely excited for it. They feel the magic of the first film has returned—it is as funny, as emotional, and as meaningful as the first part.”

Why sequel happening now

Rajkumar Hirani and Aamir Khan are reportedly pausing work on their upcoming biopic on Dadasaheb Phalke due to dissatisfaction with the script’s development. This delay provided Hirani with the opportunity to revisit a long-held idea for a 3 Idiots sequel.

The filmmaker had been contemplating a second installment for years but wanted the narrative to be “perfect” and worthy of the original’s legacy. A source said Hirani “dedicated time to expand the 3 Idiots sequel into a full-fledged screenplay” and felt this was the right moment to move forward.
