Google’s next-generation AI, Gemini, is officially making its way to Android Auto, marking the beginning of a major shift from Google Assistant.
Early users have started spotting Gemini on their car dashboards, bringing more natural conversations and expanded functionality to in-car experiences.
After months of anticipation, Google has begun rolling out Gemini on Android Auto, fulfilling its earlier promise to replace Google Assistant as the onboard AI.
According to 9to5Google, several users have reported seeing Gemini appear in place of Assistant, though Google has yet to make an official announcement. The update seems to be rolling out server-side, meaning there’s no manual way to trigger it — users simply have to wait until it reaches their devices.
The rollout reportedly requires Android Auto 15.6 or 15.7, and it appears to be available only for beta users at this stage.
What Gemini brings to android auto
Gemini introduces a more conversational and dynamic AI experience, similar to its performance in Google’s mobile and web apps. With Gemini Live, users can ask follow-up questions, interrupt responses mid-conversation, or engage in a more fluid dialogue while driving.
The AI is also connected to several Google apps, including Google Home and Google Keep. This integration allows drivers to perform complex, hands-free tasks — such as creating a grocery list, checking reminders, or asking for directions to nearby stores — without switching apps.
However, early reports suggest that some features like contact nicknames may not function properly yet, hinting that the system is still being refined.
Smarter navigation and maps integration
Earlier this week, Google also rolled out a major Gemini upgrade for Google Maps, which directly complements the Android Auto experience. Drivers can now ask questions about locations, report traffic incidents, and get more precise directions using the same conversational AI.
The combination of Gemini in both Maps and Android Auto signals Google’s push to make driving assistance more intuitive and context-aware through generative AI.
