Former speaker of the Sindh Assembly, Agha Siraj Durrani, has passed away in Karachi. He was 72. He had been undergoing treatment at a private hospital for the past several weeks after his health deteriorated.
According to family sources, Durrani was shifted to Karachi about a month ago due to worsening health conditions. Despite continuous medical care, he could not recover and breathed his last today.
Durrani’s illness and hospitalisation
Agha Siraj Durrani had been suffering from prolonged health issues. His family had moved him to a private hospital in Karachi when his condition became critical. Doctors continued intensive treatment, but his health continued to decline.
According to his doctor, Durrani was suffering from kidney disease and was shifted to Karachi for treatment a month ago.
President expresses condolences
The president of Pakistan, Asif Ali Zardari, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Agha Siraj Durrani, acknowledging his extensive contributions to Sindh’s political and social development.
In his condolence message, the president paid rich tribute to Durrani’s public and political services, describing him as a dedicated leader who played a significant role in strengthening democratic institutions in the province.
National, provincial leaders grieve loss
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has expressed deep sorrow over the death of the former Sindh Assembly speaker. The prime minister prayed for the departed soul and for patience and strength for the bereaved family. He said that Agha Siraj Durrani rendered valuable services as speaker of the Sindh Assembly, and his contributions to politics and public welfare will always be remembered.
Federal Minister Abdul Aleem Khan, also expressed grief over the passing of Agha Siraj Durrani. He prayed for the forgiveness of the departed soul and extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family. Abdul Aleem Khan described Agha Siraj Durrani as a towering figure in Sindh’s politics and paid tribute to his lifelong political and public service.
“May Allah Almighty grant the deceased a place in His infinite mercy and give patience to the grieving family,” he prayed.
Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has expressed deep sorrow and grief over the passing of senior PPP leader Agha Siraj Durrani. In his condolence message, the chief minister described Agha Siraj as a sincere, loyal, and principled leader who devoted his life to public service.
“Agha Siraj Durrani was a sincere, loyal, and principled leader of the People’s Party,” said Murad Ali Shah. “He played an important role in strengthening the Sindh Assembly and deepening democracy in the province.”
The CM added that Agha Siraj’s political and public services will always be remembered, noting that public service was the guiding principle of his politics. He prayed for the departed soul, saying, “May the Almighty elevate the ranks of the late Agha Siraj Durrani.”
Murad Ali Shah also extended his condolences to the bereaved family and prayed for their patience and strength during this difficult time.
Mayor of Karachi, Barrister Murtaza Wahab, expressed deep sorrow over the death of Agha Siraj Durrani, calling him a dignified and principled political leader. “I am heartbroken to hear of his passing. His political insight and dedication to public service will always be remembered,” Barrister Wahab said.
He prayed, “May Allah grant the departed soul a high place in Paradise and give patience and strength to his family in this difficult time.”
Barrister Wahab added that he shares the grief of the bereaved family and stands with them in their loss.
Who was Agha Siraj Durrani?
Agha Siraj Durrani was regarded as one of the senior-most leaders of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and held important positions in the party for a long time. He served as the speaker of the Sindh Assembly and played a vital role in shaping the province’s legislative and democratic framework. He had also served as the provincial minister for local government and was known as an influential figure in Sindh politics.
Born on October 5, 1953, in Shikarpur, Durrani received his early education at St. Patrick’s High School in Karachi. He later earned an LLB degree from Sindh Muslim Government Law College, laying the foundation for his distinguished political and legal career.
