A new viral health trend — mixing protein powder into coffee — is being promoted by fitness influencers as a quick way to boost energy, build muscle, and aid weight loss. But experts are now warning that this practice could instead lead to unnecessary weight gain.

Dubbed “proffee” (protein + coffee), the trend has gained traction among gym-goers and lifestyle influencers who advocate increasing daily protein intake for muscle strength, bone health, and even disease prevention in middle age.

Videos on social media platforms show users adding scoops of protein powder into their morning brew, claiming it helps them stay energized and burn calories more effectively.

Experts issue caution

However, fitness expert Adam Clarke has urged caution. He explained that while protein is vital for muscle growth and bone strength, adding it to coffee without adjusting exercise routines or overall diet could backfire.

“Protein is an essential nutrient, but if you’re not actively training or managing your calorie intake, extra protein could simply contribute to excess calories and fat storage,” Clarke said.

Balance is key

Health professionals stress that while protein supplementation has benefits, it should align with an individual’s activity level and nutritional needs. Simply adding protein powder to coffee won’t guarantee weight loss or strength gains — and for some, it may do more harm than good.

Experts advise those interested in the trend to consult with a nutritionist or trainer to tailor their diet and exercise routine, rather than relying on social media hacks.
