United States President Donald Trump has once again praised the leadership of Pakistan, highlighting its role in maintaining regional stability.
During a joint press conference with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz at the White House, the US president credited Pakistani leaders for their cooperation in de-escalating tensions with India and preventing a potentially catastrophic conflict.
Recalling his role as a mediator and engagements with both Pakistani and Indian leadership during the heightened tensions and skirmishes between the two countries, Trump said: “I spoke to some very talented people on both sides ... and I said, you know, we’re dealing with you on trade, Pakistan and India right now. I said we’re not going to deal with you on trade if you’re going to go shooting each other and whipping out nuclear weapons that maybe even affect us."
He noted that averting the conflict between the two South Asian nuclear-armed neighbours was a significant diplomatic achievement that underscored the importance of global mediation in conflict zones. He recalled how the tensions were "getting close to being out of hand", prompting him to step in and personally engage with the leaders of both nations to de-escalate the situation.
He mentioned that both countries were "well represented" during discussions, saying, "The leader of India, a big guy, was here a few weeks ago and we had great talks — and Pakistan, likewise."
Trump went on to praise the leadership of both countries, stating, “They have very strong leadership. Some people might not like me saying that, but that’s just the truth.”
Drawing a parallel with ongoing international crises, the president expressed his intention to pursue a similar ceasefire effort in Eastern Europe. “I want to bring about a similar ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine,” he added, underscoring the US commitment to global peace efforts.
