German Chancellor Friedrich Merz presented on Thursday US President Donald Trump with a framed copy of his grandfather’s birth certificate.
The document belonged to Frederick Trump, who was born in 1869 near Bad Dürkheim, Germany. Chancellor Merz shared the historical certificate during their discussions, which took place against the backdrop of ongoing tensions between the two countries over tariffs, defence spending and the war in Ukraine.
Merz informed President Trump that his grandfather, Frederick Trump, was born close to Bad Dürkheim in 1869 and was given the Christian name “Frederick”.
President Trump graciously accepted the gift, stating that he would place it in a position of honour.
