Balochistan government has declared a public holiday across the province on Youm-e-Takbir.
According to a notification issued by the Services and General Administration Department (S&GAD), all public and private offices will remain closed on May 28 to mark the occasion.
Youm-e-Takbir, observed every year on May 28, marks the day in 1998 when Pakistan conducted its first successful nuclear tests. The historic event took place in the Chagai Hills of Balochistan and established Pakistan as the seventh nuclear power in the world and the first Islamic country to possess nuclear weapons.
The journey toward a nuclear program began in the 1970s, following India's first nuclear test in 1974.
Pakistan’s leadership, especially Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, envisioned a strong defense strategy, which led to the formation of the nuclear program under the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC).
Renowned scientists like Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan played a key role in achieving this goal.
Despite international sanctions and mounting pressure, Pakistan remained committed to developing a credible nuclear deterrent.
On May 11 and 13, 1998, India conducted nuclear tests, and in response, Pakistan carried out its own tests on May 28 and May 30, ensuring strategic balance in South Asia.
Youm-e-Takbir is a symbol of national pride, unity, and scientific achievement. It reflects Pakistan’s determination to protect its sovereignty and maintain peace through strength.
The day is remembered through ceremonies, media coverage, and official statements honoring the efforts of the nation’s scientists and leaders.
