Indian tennis icon Sania Mirza is facing intense backlash from Pakistani social media users after she appeared to endorse war rhetoric amid escalating tensions between India and Pakistan.
Despite her long-standing association with Pakistan, not only as the former wife of Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik but also as the mother of Izhaan Mirza Malik, who is half Pakistani, her recent actions have left many disappointed.
The controversy erupted after Sania seemingly aligned with several Indian celebrities who celebrated the Indian military’s aggressive response following the recent Pahalgam attacks. The attacks, which remain unproven in terms of Pakistani involvement, have become a flashpoint in the region. While tensions rise, Sania’s support of the Indian narrative has been seen by many Pakistanis as insensitive, especially given the reports of civilian casualties.

One social media user commented, “You are a mother yourself and you’re celebrating a child’s death,” highlighting the emotional toll such statements have in the context of rising civilian deaths. Another added, “This is how Israel celebrates the deaths of innocent children,” drawing parallels with other global conflicts. Others expressed their disappointment by saying, “We always admired you as a woman and a feminist, but this is not how you support a war on innocent people.”
Sania Mirza had long been admired in Pakistan, with many supporting her even during her separation from Shoaib Malik. However, her recent stance has created a rift, with many fans questioning her empathy and values.
