Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP) Waqar Mehdi on Tuesday emerged victorious in the Senate by-election for a vacant seat from Sindh, according to unofficial results.
Polling, which commenced at 9am and continued uninterrupted till 4pm at the Sindh Assembly, saw a voter turnout of 161 MPAs, according to the Secretary of the provincial assembly.
Mehdi bagged 111 votes, while his rival candidate, Nighat Mirza of Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P), lagged behind significantly.
Two of Mehdi's votes were declared rejected. Nevertheless, the PPP nominee comfortably crossed the required threshold of 81 votes needed to secure the Senate seat.
