Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari led a senior party delegation to meet Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday, expressing full support for the government’s firm stance against India’s provocative actions following the Pahalgam incident.
The high-level meeting came amid rising tensions between Pakistan and India, with the prime minister categorically rejecting India’s illegal suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty and warning that Pakistan’s brave forces were ready to respond to any enemy aggression.
Water is a red line
Addressing the delegation, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif declared water a “red line” for the people of Pakistan, terming India's suspension of the treaty as an act of water aggression. “Pakistan desires peace and stability in the region but is fully capable of giving a befitting response to any threat to its sovereignty,” the premier asserted.
He condemned India’s behaviour since the April 22 Pahalgam incident as “extremely regrettable,” reaffirming that Pakistan had not only expressed concern over the attack but had also offered an impartial and transparent investigation — an offer India ignored.
The PM said India’s baseless attempts to link Pakistan to the incident, without presenting any evidence, were part of a wider propaganda campaign aimed at diverting global attention from its human rights abuses in Kashmir.
PPP reiterates support for armed forces
The PPP delegation praised the government's robust diplomatic outreach in countering Indian propaganda and exposing its war ambitions on the global stage. “We are fully united behind our brave armed forces and the government’s efforts to defend national sovereignty,” Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari said.
PPP leaders reaffirmed that all political parties stand united when it comes to national security and the defence of the motherland. They appreciated the PM's consistent engagement with international diplomats and Pakistan’s plan to raise the Indus Waters Treaty violation in the United Nations Security Council.
Consensus on power sector reforms
The meeting also discussed ongoing reforms in the energy sector. It was agreed that electricity distribution companies (DISCOs) will be handed over to the provincial governments within two months. The government also initiated consultations on the upcoming federal budget with its largest coalition party. "We prioritize consultations in all matters," the PM remarked.
The PPP delegation expressed full confidence in the government’s reform agenda and emphasized the importance of strengthening provincial autonomy.
Diplomatic efforts to continue
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reiterated that Pakistan is actively meeting with ambassadors from various countries to communicate its stance and expose India’s aggressive designs. “We will raise this issue vigorously in the UN Security Council and show the world India’s disgusting face and its intentions to disturb regional peace,” he declared.
