Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari on Thursday reaffirmed that no new canals will be constructed without the consensus of all provinces.

Speaking to media after holding consultations with Bilawal, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif stressed that while projects like the Kalabagh Dam may have economic importance, nothing is more vital than preserving the spirit of the federation.

“Pakistan is a federation. Matters that impact the provinces should be resolved through mutual consultation,” said the premier. “We must avoid projects that create division among the provinces. No canal will be built unless there is mutual agreement.”

The prime minister confirmed that a Council of Common Interests (CCI) meeting will be held on May 2, where the matter will be discussed in detail. He reiterated that no progress will be made on canal construction until a decision is reached by consensus within the CCI.

Bilawal Bhutto expressed gratitude to the prime minister for convening the crucial CCI meeting. “Three provinces have already expressed objections to the Kalabagh Dam,” Bilawal pointed out, emphasizing the importance of inclusive decision-making.

“We are united in our stand that no new canals should be built unless all stakeholders agree,” he stated, adding, “I thank the prime minister for listening to our concerns and agreeing to resolve this issue within the constitutional framework.”

The two leaders said they also discussed very seriously India’s recent announcement regarding the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, with both parties condemning the move.

“We stand united in condemning India’s unilateral suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty,” Bilawal said, expressing solidarity with the federal government on the matter.
