The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has initiated the re-registration process for VPN (Virtual Private Network) service providers, aiming to regulate the sector through a new class license system for data services.
According to sources, VPN service providers will be required to secure class licenses from the PTA, with the government charging a fee ranging from Rs100,000 to Rs300,000 per licence.
"VPN service providers will be registered locally through class licenses,” sources said. This step is expected to enhance monitoring and regulation of VPN services across the country.
The new framework mandates VPN providers to establish data centres within Pakistan and comply with local data protection laws. PTA will have the authority to access users' data and browsing history to ensure adherence to regulations.
The re-registration initiative is designed to improve cybersecurity measures, allowing PTA to track and respond to cyberattacks with greater precision.
Stakeholder consultations were conducted prior to implementing the decision, with the Pakistan Software Houses Association actively advocating for the registration process.
