The judicial remand of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Founder Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi was extended until September 16 by the Islamabad Accountability Court on Monday in connection with the new Toshakhana reference.
Judge Nasir Javed presided over the hearing, during which Imran Khan, Bushra Bibi, and their legal team appeared before the court. The extension in their remand was granted after thoroughly examining the arguments presented by both the defence and the prosecution.
The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) prosecutor sought access to the judicial records of the earlier Toshakhana reference, but this request was rejected by the court. The judge, after considering the merits of the arguments, dismissed the NAB’s plea.
The court also scheduled a hearing for the bail applications of Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi on September 6.
This is about the new Toshakhana reference, in which the accountability watchdog accuses the couple of purchasing and subsequently selling a jewellery set valued at Rs75 million.
Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi were taken into custody by NAB in July this year under the new Toshakhana reference, which has drawn significant public and media attention.
The case pertains to the alleged misuse of the Toshakhana, a state repository where gifts received by government officials are deposited. The new reference accuses the PTI supremo and his wife of financial misconduct, intensifying the ongoing legal challenges faced by the former prime minister.
