Iran has commenced the construction of a 300-kilometer-long and 4-meter-high wall along its border with Afghanistan in response to the escalating threat of terrorism.
The decision comes after the Taliban took control of Afghanistan in 2021, leading to a significant increase in terrorist activities across the region, particularly in neighboring countries.
Iranian officials have voiced concerns about the resurgence and support of various terrorist organizations within Afghanistan, including ISIS-K (Islamic State Khorasan Province).
These groups have been linked to several attacks on Iranian soil, prompting the Iranian government to take decisive action.
The wall, which is estimated to cost $3 billion, is part of Iran's broader strategy to enhance national security by curbing the infiltration of terrorists, drug trafficking, and illegal immigration.
Iranian Defense Minister Mohammad Reza Ashtiani emphasized that the presence of these terrorist groups in Afghanistan poses a severe threat to regional stability.
The project is expected to be completed by the end of this year. Iranian authorities believe that sealing the border will significantly reduce the cross-border terrorist activities and smuggling operations that have intensified since the Taliban’s rise to power.
