World number five Jessica Pegula announced her withdrawal from the French Open on Thursday, citing an incomplete recovery from an injury.
The 30-year-old American shared the news on Instagram, stating, "Unfortunately, pulling out of @rolandgarros this year. I'm just about back to practicing normal (I haven't had any issues for weeks), but I played it super safe with recovery and returned to play. If I had another 5-7 days, I would have been there 100%."
Pegula has not competed in an official match since mid-April during the Billie Jean King Cup. She subsequently withdrew from the Madrid Open due to an unspecified injury and missed the Rome Open, the final major clay-court event before Roland Garros. Despite these setbacks, Pegula is optimistic about her return to the tour.
"I will definitely be back for a full grass season and the rest of the summer, grinding out the rest of the year," she assured her followers. Pegula, who reached the quarterfinals at Roland Garros in 2022, aims to make a strong comeback after missing this year's tournament, where she was eliminated in the third round last year by Belgium's Elise Mertens.
The French Open draw is set to take place later on Thursday, with the tournament beginning this weekend.
