Sri Lanka 144-5 at stumps, match drawn

KARACHI: Sri Lanka were 144 for five wickets in their second innings at close of play on the fifth and final day of the first Test against Pakistan here at the National Stadium Karachi (NSK) on Wednesday.
Kumara Sangakkara was the only top scorer before he was out lbw by Kaneria on 65. Thilan Samaraweera and P. Jayawardene were still at the crease when the bales were dropped at 24 and 7, respectively.
Sri Lanka were 54 for three in their second innings after Pakistan skipper Younis Khan fell for 313, at tea on the final day of the first Test on Wednesday.
Sri Lanka lost early wickets to inject some excitement as
the test headed for a tame draw after Pakistan declared their
first innings on 765 for six, a lead of 121 runs, one hour
before tea.
Younis missed a chance to surpass Brian Lara's record Test
score of 400 not out and wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal was unbeaten
on 158 when the hosts declared their innings.
Sri Lanka lost openers Malinda Warnapura (2), debutant
Tharanga Paranavitana (9) and Tillekeratne Dilshan (8) in quick
succession to slip to 45 for three.
Pacer Umar Gul struck in the first over when he had
Warnapura caught behind and then had Dilshan caught at deep
midwicket while Paranavitana was run out.
Kumar Sangakkara (32) and skipper Mahela Jayawardene, who
was yet to score, were batting at the interval.
Younis fell 87 runs short of Lara's record to the
disappointment of the spectators who turned up in large numbers
in anticipation of a new record.
The home captain had added just seven runs to his overnight
score when he was bowled by Dilhara Fernando, who got one to
break back sharply on the flat track.
Younis walked back to warm ovation and handshakes from the
Sri Lankan players, having batted for 768 minutes. He faced 568
balls and struck 27 fours and four sixes.
Akmal, who resumed on 27, hit his sixth Test hundred from
184 balls which included eight fours and five sixes.
