KARACHI: Amid wheel-jam and shutter down strike in Sindh against the new local body system, the ruling PPP is set to table the Sindh People’s Local Government Ordinance (SPLGO) 2012 in Sindh Assembly today on Monday, SAMAA reported.
The strike was given by nationalist parties’ alliance, Sindh Bachao Committee, announcing to hold rallies, sit-ins and observe hunger strikes across the province.
Owing to the wheel-jam and shutter down strike, vehicular traffic remained sparse on the roads in interior Sindh, with markets, shops and most educational institutes closed. The strike call did not affect Karachi.
The bill was signed by the Governor Sindh, Dr. Ishrat Ul-Ebad Khan on Sept 07. Later, the provincial government issued notification for creation of metropolitan corporations in five divisions: Karachi, Hyderabad, Mirpur Khas, Sukkur and Larkana.
All 18 towns of Karachi have been also restored while all tehsils and talukas of Sindh have been promoted to towns. A list for appointments of administrators in 18 towns of Karachi has been sent to the Local Bodies Department of Sindh.
Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah says the ordinance will be tabled in the Sindh Assembly today for debate.
Source said President Zardari has directed PPP Sindh lawmakers to keep mum and don’t give vent to their reservations over the ordinance under the party’s reconciliation policy. -- SAMAA
