Staff Report
ISLAMABAD: Supreme Court (SC) Monday discharged the intra-court appeal filed by real estate tycoon Malik Riaz in contempt of court case over an objection.
According to the SC’s Registrar, the copy of court’s ruling on Friday was not attached with the Malik’s appeal; hence, the court rejected the appeal with the objection.
Malik Riaz has been asked to re-submit his appeal along with the apex court’s ruling.
Earlier today, Advocate on Record Raja Abdul Ghafoor submitted to the court the intra-court appeal against the court’s decision to frame charge against Riaz in court of contempt case.
It is pertinent to note here that the appeal was filed under new Contempt of Court law 2012.
It should be mentioned here that during last hearing, the court decided to indict Malik Riaz in the today’s hearing.
In the last hearing, the three-member bench of the apex court, headed by Justice Shakirullah Jan, refused Riaz’s plea seeking exemption from court appearance and ruled that he is bound to appear before the court until a decision to the contrary comes.
Justice Jan directed Riaz’s counsel, Dr Abdul Basit, to submit an application to the court explaining the kind of exemption his client seeks.
Dr Basit told the court that his client had come to Pakistan for the last hearing while his medical treatment was in progress abroad.
The court said that it would continue hearing the case and issued a notice to Attorney General Irfan Qadir, who has been named as a prosecutor in the case. SAMAA
