Doctors strike enters 13th day amid end to govt deadline

Staff Report
LAHORE: The strike by Young Doctors Association (YDA) entered 13th day today (Saturday) as the deadline set by the provincial government came to an end to ensue disciplinary action against the protesting doctors.

Negotiations and threats by the government could not deter doctors from the strike exposing patients and their attendants to mounting troubles.

The deadline fixed by the Punjab government for doctors to end their strike, is over. The provincial government imposed ban on rallies and processions by promulgating Section-144 in the hospitals. The government said crackdown on doctors could be launched anytime.

The cases against the protesting doctors will be lodged under Maintenance of Public Order (MPO)-16 against which no bail will be possible.

Meantime, the doctors toughened their stance after strict measures taken by the government.

Also, the government took up several alternative arrangements to run the hospitals’ affairs. According to Faisalabad DCO Nasim Sadiq, a team of hundred doctors has been formed which will take charge in different government hospitals today.

Medical camps will also be set up in the city, he added. SAMAA
