ISLAMBAD: Using his discretionary powers, President Asif Ali Zardari on Tuesday converted death sentence of Indian prisoner, Sarabjeet Singh, into life imprisonment on humanitarian grounds, SAMAA reports.
President Zardari commuted the death sentence of Sarabjit Singh to life in prison, the equivalent of time served in this case, Presidential spokesman Farhatullah Babar said Tuesday.
He said Singh would be freed after completion of paperwork.
Sindh was convicted of his involvement in serial bomb blast in Lahore and Multan in 1990. He was set to be hanged in 2008, but the government halted his execution after Singh's family sought his release on humanitarian grounds.
"We always had faith in God and we knew our efforts to get him back would be successful," said Singh's daughter Swapandeep in an interview. She said she would go to the border with her mother and sister to receive her father. -- SAMAA
