Kohistan dance sentence: NA committee summons KP officials

Staff Report

ISLAMABAD: Taking notice of media reports on Kohistan dance row, National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Law and Justice today asked for a report from Inspector General of Police (IGP) and Chief Secretary of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Four women and two boys were sentenced to death by a jirga (assembly) in Kohistan on charges of dancing at a wedding party.

The committee has also sought details from Interior Minister Rehman Malik and Human Rights Adviser Mustafa Nawaz.

In addition, the committee opposed MNA Riaz Fatiyana’s proposal to allocate a special seat for eunuchs in the National Assembly.

It also reviewed an MQM Bill, seeking change of procedures to establish new provinces.

MQM MNA Wasim Akhtar feared that Hazara and South Punjab could also face Balochsitan-like situation due to condition of two-third majority.

The standing committee decided to invite Raza Rabbani and Law Minister in the next meeting on new provinces. SAMAA
