KARACHI: The pitched battles between law-enforcement personnel and heavily armed gangsters continued on Monday in Lyari locality of the city as the crackdown entered fourth day, SAMAA reports.
Fresh police reinforcement was sent to the restive area where thousands of people are confided inside their home due to the ongoing operation against alleged criminals.
At least 20 people including four police officials have been killed and 55 were injured during the last four days in the exchange of fire. Two cameramen of private television channels were also among those injured.
On Monday, two people were injured in firing at Cheel Chowk area.
Owing to the tense situation, ninth class paper scheduled to be held today was cancelled examination centers of the area. A new date will be announced later.
Senior police officials claim that they have regained control of major areas in Lyari. However, banned Peoples Aman Committee leader Zafar Baloch contradicted the police claim, saying they had not been able to take control of “even one inch of Lyari”.
SSP CIA Chaudhry Aslam is leading the operation against which residents of Lyari took out processions and demanded an immediate halt to it.
Protests were held in the Albela Signal, Mauripur Road, Gurumandir, Kalapul and Nishtar Road areas on Sunday. -- SAMAA
