ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Law and Justice on Tuesday rejected a bill, seeking to bar dual nationality holders from taking part in elections.
The bill had been tabled by Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N). The standing committee was presided over by Chaudhry Abdul Ghafoor.
The committee said there was no need to introduce another bill on dual nationality when it already existed.
Law Minister Maula Bux Chandio said he would be responsible for those summaries, which had been forwarded to Prime Minister Gilani during his term. “No opinion has been sought from us to write a letter to Swiss authorities,” he said.
The Law Minster blamed the Opposition for the government’s failure to table an Accountability Bill.
An official of Election Commission told the committee that all Senate candidates have submitted affidavits, confirming none of them is dual nationality holder.
This form will be to be filled by candidates before parliamentary election as well, he said.
The committee also rejected another bill on Political Parties Order. The bill was presented by Pilwasha Khan. SAMAA
