Zardari hails Obama’s proposal for Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari on Friday welcomed US President Barack Obama’s initiatives for Pakistan to strengthen democracy and his call to US congress to pass a bill for $1.5 billion aid to Pakistan every year.
Zardari said that Pakistan has always held the Pakistan-US relationship in high esteem and Obama’s announcement during his speech on renewed strategy on Afghanistan and Pakistan, will further cement these ties.
He said the creation of Reconstruction Opportunity Zones (ROZs) in tribal areas with US help will create an enabling environment for the people of the area hwo have been living under duress for a long time due to terrorism and extremism.
“Pakistan has always maintained that without getting to the root cause the menace of terrorism could not be overcome and that is only possible by providing the people there with employment opportunities,” he added.
Zardari said, Pakistan, which is at the forefront in war against terror, lost its great leader and his spouse Benazir Bhutto at the hands of terrorists.
“No one knows better than us the importance of a society which is free from terrorism and extremism as Pakistanis have suffered immensely at the hands of extremist elements.”
Zardari said that Pakistan always wants to maintain friendly relationship with all its neighbours on the basis of equality, non-interference and respect for sovereignty. -APP
