ISLAMABAD: Chief of Army Staff, General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani called on President Asif Ali Zardari at the Presidency Friday. Regional security situation and the professional matters came under discussion, a press release from the President House said.

The country is going through a major political turmoil with the leader of the opposition Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif backing the lawyers' long march, which has gained tremendous momentum for the restoration of the deposed Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry.

Kayani, in an attempt to patch things up, met with Zardari and Gilani seperately to discuss ways to resolve the prevalent political crisis.

According to sources, Zardari has agreed to end the crisis in the light ot the Charter of Democracy (CoD), which was signed by the slain prime minister Benazir Bhutto and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif.

Gilani, sources further said, was in favour of restoration of the deposed Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry. However, Zardari is of the view that Chaudhry should be restored through the CoD.

Zardari was also in favour of ending the Governor's rule in Punjab.
